The Moorside

Based on the true story of the disappearance of Shannon Matthews in 2008, The Moorside is a two part series that showcases not only the happenings around the girl's disappearance which are unsettling at best, but it also shows the outcome of a community pulling together, for better or worse. The show focuses less on the actual alleged kidnapping but instead portrays how people deal with underlying feelings of lack of security and for affirmation in ways they know best, and for handling past pains and social class perceptions.

But that's not all. The story is as much about goodwill, decency, doing the right thing in spite of popular opinion, and honesty. All in all, a lesson in human nature and in friendship.

Parts of the show kept coming back to mind for days after I watched it. Certainly food for thought, as makes you rethink what you know, or what you think you know, and what you see in the press. Or, for that matter, what you don't. Excellent acting by Sheridan Smith and Siobhan Finneran. It's a two hour watch, and will leave you encouraged, hopefully, or at least with a bit more empathy for those that don't often have, or are given, a voice.
